Stair Runners: How We’re Getting Ready for Installation
We’ve officially committed to putting in the runners ourselves and agreed on the material. In other words… We bought the rugs!!! Woohoo!!
Our townhome is definitely settling. Nail pops and cracks in the caulk and woodwork are extra noticeable these days—especially in the cold weather we’ve been having. The woodwork, trim and caulk along the edges of our stairs needed some help! I decided to remove the cracked filler, replace it and update the trim color from a high gloss to a satin finish (Sherwin Williams Extra White). The walls in both staircases will eventually be painted a matte finish in the same color. Hopefully, we’ll tackle that project later this year. Fingers crossed!!
The Process
Ripping out the old caulk and filler (and making a huge mess!)
Patch the new gap with filler (I used drywall spackle after doing a bit of research!)
Sand the filler smooth
Sand the risers (whatever was used to seal the wood dripped down the risers and when it’s sunny, the drips are super noticeable)
Caulk the gap between the filler and wood trim
Tape off the wood treads
Continue the caulk line around the stairs—the builders didn’t see a reason to, but I think it’ll look way better!
Paint!!
Do it all again on the second set of stairs! AHHH!
