Easy DIY Peg Rail & Hallway Makeover
A few weeks ago, I shared a few projects we wanted to finish before the holiday season starts. We’ve officially checked off the first on the list!
This little hallway leading in from the garage was number one on the fall project checklist. The first floor of our townhome is, unfortunately, lacking in the closet department—there isn’t one! The coat closet is at the top of the stairs. Andrew and I constantly climb the stairs to the main level to grab our jackets, backpack, purse, keys… All the things! We figured having our items hanging by the door would cut down on the stair climbing.
I did a little searching on Pinterest for ‘small entryway solutions’ and came across the peg rail solution. If you’re anything like me, when you learn something new you start seeing it all over the place?! (Sort of like when I decided I wanted a fiddle leaf fig tree, suddenly I noticed them everywhere!!) After making rough plans, Andrew and I set off to our second home: Home Depot.
The Before
The Process
We bought an eight foot long 1x8 from Home Depot
Then Andrew ripped two inches off to serve as the top ledge
The remaining 5.5 inch piece was used as the base for the pegs to screw into
Andrew trimmed the top ledge, base and picture ledge moulding to fit the length of our wall
He then helped me do some math to determine even spacing for the ten pegs
We used the drill press to drill pilot holes for the pegs, and four additional holes to mount the base to the wall
Andrew screwed the base into studs
Then he brad nailed the picture ledge moulding and the top ledge into place
I caulked the seams and primed the raw wood
Next, I primed and painted the walls above the peg rail with my favorite white: Extra White by Sherwin Williams in matte
We taped off the baseboards, trim and wall
I painted the moulding and walls Retreat by Sherwin Williams in matte
After the paint fully dried, I screwed in the wood pegs
Andrew’s mom is an artist and painted this gorgeous Path to Enlightenment piece. The white tree pulls me in and I just cannot get enough of it. I’ve asked Andrew to build me a custom floating frame with leftover wood from our bench project. More to come!
The Side-By-Side
Truthfully, I am having second thoughts on the wooden pegs—it leans a little farmhouse for our style, but I have my eye on these as a backup down the road if I feel like it needs a little modernizing. We’ll see… What do you think? Otherwise, we’re pretty happy with the result and are looking forward to running back up the stairs a lot less!
